“Monarch Flutterbye” Jacket
An original design, double-reverse appliqué. Traditional
appliqué quilting adds a layer of fabric, but with Reverse
Applique, a layer of fabric is cut away to expose a fabric
underneath. After designing this pattern, I layered yellow Kona
Cotton between black cotton and did the machine satin-stitch embroidery. Then
I carefully cut away the black fabric on both the top and bottom
side of each wing, to expose the yellow fabric. When the jacket
moved, it gave the illusion that you could see light passing
through the yellow fabric.
