A True Scrap Quilt
I had a collection of carefully measured and cut strips of
coordinating solid fabrics for some wearable-art vests in the
1980’s. I decided that I would make a “true scrap quilt” and
each day before I went to work, I pieced one block. I discovered
that the colors went really well with a floral print in my
stash, so I worked that print into the quilt as well.
The sashing was made by cutting a quarter-inch stripe crosswise in
¾” strips, and then sewing a strip of solid black to each side
of the striped strip, leaving a one-quarter inch “checkerboard
stripe” in the middle of the sashing strip.
To achieve the “on
point” appearance, I created two squares of 64 blocks each (8
rows of 8 blocks), and then I cut one of those blocks diagonally
from corner to corner, and attached the longest edge of each of
those triangles to one side of the remaining large block of 64
squares. (Not recommended unless you understand how to “baby”
the bias edges of the quilt.) This was a fun project and it
feels so good to use up “the stash.” This quilt was exhibited at
Northwest Quilters show.
